bhi approached a National Coastwatch Institution about improving their marine radio communications, specifically looking at improved sound quality to ensure clearer transmissions over the radio for weak signals. Miscommunications with the Coastguard can lead to serious consequences, making any potential improvements critically important.

How bhi helped with noise cancelling

Some of the watchkeepers are slightly hearing impaired and wanted an easy solution that didn’t require lots of messing about with settings. bhi loaned the organisation 1 x Dual In-Line DSP noise cancelling module and 1 x NES10-2MK4 DSP noise cancelling speaker to test out on their radio system.

Both systems are extremely simple to add to radio communications; they simply need to be plugged in, and the noise cancelling level set, and then they will automatically remove background noise from all communications. Our DSP noise-cancelling solutions eliminate background noise while preserving speech clarity, allowing transmissions to be heard clearly without the need to adjust volume settings.

Final results

After three months of testing, they decided that the units were beneficial to their operations and found the units useful, and they improved their communications. They had positive feedback from staff who are slightly hearing impaired, who appreciated the extra clarity provided by the noise-cancelling.

They purchased both units for their permanent setup but found that the Dual In-Line was the most suitable unit for their setup, being used with an extension speaker and also for recording purposes. The Dual In-Line is buried in their radio housing, ensuring it doesn't take up any desk space and keeps their workspace clear and uncluttered.

They said, “We’ve installed both units and we are already seeing some benefit on CH16 with the Dual In-Line unit, which is driving both the recorder and the extension speaker. The recordings in particular are much clearer".
