New U.S. Import Rules: What This Means For Shipments From The UK

From 29th August 2025, a significant change to U.S. import regulations will be implemented. The United States will remove the $800 de minimis threshold for commercial shipments for all countries.

Previously, with this rule in place, low-value packages (under $800) were able to enter the U.S. duty-free with minimal customs paperwork, keeping shipping costs low and ensuring a quicker process through customs.

From 29th August 2025, the United States will remove the $800 (approx. £590) de minimis threshold for commercial shipments from the UK. All packages sent to the U.S., regardless of their value, will be subject to a 10% tariff, full customs clearance process and may incur duties, taxes, and fees. 

What this means for bhi orders to the U.S.

A blanket tariff of 10% will apply to all goods arriving in the USA from the UK, so exports from bhi to the USA that were exempt from customs charges will likely see increased costs of approximately 10%. Typically for a £200 (270USD) order, charges of approx. £20 (approx. 27USD) plus a small admin fee will apply.

The postal service Royal Mail has set up its website so that this fee is paid in advance. Once you have placed your order, we will send you a follow up email to pay these customs charges before shipping your goods. This means your goods should reach you with no other charges or delays.

Your options are as follows:

• Order directly from us and pay a 10% customs charge plus a small admin fee in advance, and your goods will arrive in the usual way.
• A full refund, and then you can purchase from one of our authorised US dealers; DX Engineering, HRO, R&L Electronics.
