FAQs

How do I power the NES10‑2 MK4?

It runs off any 10–18 V DC supply (1A) - simply connect power and the audio cable, and the speaker auto‑starts. The front LED shows DSP status (green = DSP on; red = DSP off; no LED bypass mode).

How do I connect it to my radio?

Operation is straightforward - use the included 2m mono audio input lead (3.5 mm jack) and plug into the extension speaker socket or headphone output of your radio. There should be no need to adjust the audio volume, but you can increase the volume output by turning the small control on the top of the speaker. The unit is very user-friendly and includes overload protection and automatic muting when headphones are plugged in.

What signals does the DSP handle?

Works effectively on AM, SSB, CW, HF broadcast, CB, marine, and up to VHF. It significantly reduces static, electrical hash, QRM, and tone signals.

How do I adjust noise reduction levels?

Push the small grey knob into the switch on the rear of the speaker, making sure you line up the arrow on the switch with the line on the grey knob. Rotate the rotary knob to the desired level of DSP noise cancellation.

Can I bypass the DSP?

Yes, toggle the “DSP on/off” switch to bypass and hear your radio in direct mode—useful for normal audio or diagnostic checks.

What DSP filter range is provided?

There are 8 filter levels which offer noise cancelling between 9 and 40 dB. There is up to 65 dB of tone reduction for strong interfering signals.

Can the speaker be used in professional or commercial environments beyond amateur radio?

Yes, the bhi NES10-2 MK4 speaker can be used in professional or commercial environments beyond amateur radio. The technology is suitable for any situation where clear speech communication is required—such as maritime operations, scanners, base stations, commercial vehicles (like trucks and taxis), and other professional radio communication setups.

Why can I hear my voice in the speaker when I transmit?

It sounds like you have some RFI or earth ground loop issues. Our products are designed to minimise the effects of stray RFI and earth ground loops. There are several reasons why this can happen, the two main ones are:

a) A poorly matched antenna, which results in RF being reflected back into the radio room.

b) A difference in ground currents between pieces of equipment. RFI issues are usually caused by reflected waves coming back down the outside of the coax, and as with most amplified audio equipment, you will hear yourself on transmit coming back through the speaker system or headphones. Earth loop problems are usually caused when the same power supply for the radio and “add-on” equipment is being used.

You could try adding ferrites to the audio and power leads, if the feedback isn’t too bad, but the quickest and most cost-effective way to sort out earth loop/RFI issues is to use a separate 12 V DC power supply like our PSU12-2A-WW. This, in most cases, has the effect of breaking the earth loop and keeping the stray RFI out. The other option is to use one of our GroundBreaker audio isolation units to get rid of the feedback.
